Some users are aesthetically more attracted to charming characters and graphics like the infamous Hello Kitty or our favorite childhood shows. When designing adorable visuals, you must think about what attributes make it cute. The whole concept is subjective, but there are standard do’s and don’ts when it comes to this creative style.
The natural feeling when coming across this design is feeling warm and fuzzy, kind of like home. These emotions help us associate what we think is cute and what isn’t. Some think dogs are cute while others adore reptiles. The feelings are complicated.
Whatever the case is, cuteness sells!
3 Steps to cuteness:
- Colors
Colors evoke different kinds of emotions. We know yellow to be happy and joyful while blue drives peace and calmness.
To embed that warm and fuzzy feeling, pink isn’t always the answer.
Colors very in culture.
Think about when someone is having a baby. Primary and pastels are used to portray a soothing and dominant cute aesthetic. When kids move into the toddler stage, you’ll start to see bolder colors for when they establish their personality.
- Imagery
There are a few categories of a picture where most users associate cuteness. Using stock imagery is cheap, but still effective.
Images that deal with smaller forms/offspring provoke the best emotions. Kittens, babies, puppies, and stuffed animals all hit the right part of our brains that make us want to smile.
Stock images can be a great start to this step in the “cute” process. Once you’ve established your stand on the adorable scale, you can begin to incorporate your brand and associate it with these emotions based on the images on your site.
- Content
The key is to write content without using the typical baby talk. As we mentioned before, cuteness is subjective so be careful when addressing certain topics. Don’t stir the pot!
The goal is to establish warmth in your content. Not necessarily describe cuteness, but to evoke it through your content. This is where creativity comes into play!
Master the skill of creating visual characteristics through your content to evoke the emotion you want. This can be a great skill builder for you and your team.
It never hurts to constantly be testing the creative minds to go beyond their regular schedule.
Keep in mind, you don’t need to saturate your site with a cuteness overload. Splash some here and there and you’ll be good to go.
