It's a few weeks since we've done a recap, and of course in that time a lot has gone on. It's hard enough to keep up with the happenings regularly. But don't worry, we have you covered. American Express let people in on five crucial tactics for mobile advertising, Pinterest has hired a Newspaper president, and Facebook opened up an engineering office in Boston. Here's what you may have missed this week:
Mobile Tactics
American Express is one of the best known credit card companies--and they didn't earn that popularity through dumb luck. It's safe to say they know a thing or two about what it takes to advertise, and advertise well. They recently published an article geared toward small businesses, showing different tactics that are crucial when it comes to mobile advertising. Throughout the article they introduce some unfamiliar terms, such as "native advertising", as well as encourage to use new techniques, such as the use of QR codes. It's definitely an interesting read, and one that would be worth to read in full.
Pinterest Partnerships
Pinterest recently added a new member to their team, a woman by the name of Joanne Bradford. What's interesting about this new addition is that Bradford was previously the president of a newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle. Bradford's role in the company will be the head of partnerships, trying to develop new global commercial partnerships as well as content partnerships. Bradford will also have a role in helping to determine which products Pinterest will develop for its advertiser partners. There is also the suspicion that Pinterest will not be able to afford this new addition to their company, monetary-wise.
Facebook in Boston
Almost everybody knows the origination story of Facebook, started by a nerdy college student at Harvard in Boston Massachusetts. Since the success of Facebook, however, its main headquarters have been situated in California. However, Facebook recently announced that they be will opening a new engineering office in Boston, close to where it all began. These Facebook engineering offices are nothing new--there are already four more in Seattle, London, New York, and California. This new engineering team, which will start out small, will be focusing on new infrastructure projects, such as networking, storage, security, and language runtimes.
Persona
Persona is a new tool, geared towards college and high school students, but definitely a viable option for adults and businesses as well. Persona monitors a user's social media presence all the time, 24/7, and flags posts that may be "regrettable" or content that could be questionable. Though it's mostly a problem with personal social media accounts, businesses sometimes too can post content without thinking it through all the way--leading to a number of consequences. There are two versions of Persona available, depending on what a particular user needs it for. One version looks at text only, scanning for key terms and phrases to flag. The other version looks at pictures as well as text. Persona looks at the social media sites of Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
Twitter Shares
Just yesterday Twitter closed its first ever day of shares--in the stock market that is. The stock shares began at $26, but they immediately jumped up to $45. Professionals are saying Twitter's release of stock shares have been the most highly anticipated since Facebook started selling shares last year. Actor Patrick Stewart, perhaps most famous for his role as Captain Pickard, was there in New York to ring the bell, signaling Twitter's trading debut. However, many people think that Twitter is starting to enter the "bubble territory". Since Twitter's launch seven years ago, they have yet to make a profit. While they have garnered much revenue, they spend that revenue buying and investing in other companies.
That's all we have for this week. While there's much more going on this week than can even be fit into one article, hopefully these tidbits of information will help you garner a rounded idea of what's happening in the social media and marketing universe. Happy Friday everyone!
