TagTray: A Look Into User-Generated Galleries

A user-generated gallery is a collection of pictures displayed on your website by pulling from social media hashtags. This is an awesome feature to have for a few reasons.

  • You have a variety of real models that are also your customers. This is as authentic as it gets and customer centered photos usually rank high on businesses websites/social media.
  • You are involving your audience in a way that features them.
  • Photos of your products from all different angles and styles of photography may make its way onto your website.
  • Customers get to see your gear in action.
    • This is better than a review, if you are investing in some high end bike shorts, it would be great to see people actually enjoying the product. This will prevent you from buying it and later finding out no one could ever possibly bike in those shorts.

Who is it For?

Before we get started, let us talk about who will benefit the most from a user-generated gallery.

  • This is perfect for retail: purses, clothes, shoes, you name it! Customers love seeing models they can relate to wearing products that they love
  • This can also be used for articles and news outlets. It compiles anything someone would post using hashtags. For example, if you ran a photo or blog contest, all the contestants can make it to the website using your hashtag.
  • Restaurants can use this. Think of all the food pictures that are Instagramed daily. Anyone that snaps a photo in your restaurant can use your hashtag to show their experience.
  • Any website featuring a product that can be shown in action.

Pros VS Cons

Pros

  • TagTray is a great way to add a visual appear to your website

  •  This brings photos that you do not have to take

  • It allows your customers to be your models

  • It better than reviews, people get to witness others wearing or enjoying your products

Cons

  • If your business does not have popular social media outlets you may not be able to pull in many photos

  • TagTray does not have a feature where you can click the photo to purchase the product like its competitor Olapic.

    • You are able to embed the gallery on the product page and have a link for the checkout to get around this, though.

  • This is not appropriate for non-visual businesses that cannot use consumer photos or companies that consumers would not want to submit an action photo to (Kleenex, for example).

  • There is a lot of coding involving to prepare your website for TagTray, do not attempt this if you are uncomfortable with coding.

    • However, you will be able to use all the features on a user-friendly dashboard after the website is prepared.

Now that you know about at least one way of acquiring  a user-generated gallery, get out there and ask for those hashtags!
