In this blog, we talk about the second phase of team collaboration headed by the manager. (Sponsoring)
As mention in our previous blog, being a mentor and a coach allows you to be aware and complacent around your team. However, there is one step, or aspect, to the leading process that requires some attention beyond face-to-face interaction.
Such as…
- 1 on 1 meeting
- spotlight recognition
- event planning
- special meeting
Sponsoring
Sponsoring is all about the feeling and emotion behind helping someone get to the next step. Listening and developing opportunities while knowing just the right person for the job.
As someone’s sponsor, you put their name and work into the mix. It will help them get the experience and visibility needed to grow and prosper within their role.
In this instance, you are putting your reputation on the line.
Many good things come from offering someone an opportunity they cannot find themselves. It is the most effective at helping grow someone’s career and is also very rewarding.
When someone has a sponsor, they are more equipped and willing to have access to career-launching work. With sponsorship, it allows comfort and creates a more ambitious mindset to take actions that lead to more growth.
Something to consider when offering a name to an assignment:
- Public recognition – things such as job board postings, company shout-outs, presentations, thanking them, or any feedback about their hard work.
- Internal opportunities – give them fun and creative opportunities like writing the company blog, conference calls, and even collaborate on big projects.
- Challenges – give your tea or individual a task just beyond their comfort and skill level. Push them to challenge themselves as well as seeking benefits from creative endeavors.
In the previous blog, we spoke about members who were underrepresented. Sometimes they are over-mentored but under-sponsored. They get a lot of advice but it’s rare to see support like sponsorships.
Look at the daily communications you participate in: your work chat logs, the conversations you have with others, the process for figuring out who should fix a bug or work on a new project.
There are many moments to sponsor someone throughout the day.
