Google+ experienced another data leak, the second this year. With the risk of losing consumers trust and information, Google announced they will be shutting down this platform within the next 90 days.
The latest leak
According to Google, the latest fail point in the system affected around 52.5 million users.
Data compensated:
- Profiles
- Name
- Email addresses
- Age
- Occupation
Even if your account was private, your information was still vulnerable during this time.
Apps were also a culprit during this period as they have stored information that was leaked.
“With the discovery of this new bug, we have decided to expedite the shut-down of all Google+ APIs; this will occur within the next 90 days,” says David Thacker, VP of project management at Google
“In addition, we have also decided to accelerate the sunsetting of consumer Google+ from August 2019 to April 2019.”
Discovery
They discovered the bug during a standard testing procedure. There is no evidence that the developers working with the programs knew about this breach.
The last breach vulnerability had potential to be exposed for 3 years. Google found out in March but didn’t disclose the information to the public until October. Contrary to last time, Google contacted its users right away.
